Bentalls Centre, Kingston-upon-Thames, London

The Boo-boos and I went to see this shopping mall driven by the curiosity of the feedbacks given by Karthik's friends. When we stepped in, we really got overwhelmed by the sheer size and space of the mall and the shops located on each level. We all felt that it was pretty similar to the Blue Water shopping centre at Kent. These pics were taken at Bentalls Centre when we were going around the mall. Since it's Christmas celebrations time, the decorations and extra lightings added flavour to the mall, I guess!

My Current Read:- Alexander: Ends of the Earth

In a span of one month I have completed the trilogy of books on Alexander. It's been one roller-coaster ride to have known him, his passion to pursue his dreams and his vision for his men. The three volumes have been Child of a dream, Sands of Ammon and Ends of the Earth. What a king and a man he was. Amazing passion. He was undefeated until the end, and only because an unknown illness while returning back to his home country. Very unfortunate. His life story also teaches one about many virtues in life. Character integrity, humanity, belief in destiny, pursuing ones dreams. Amazing work by Valerio Messimo Manfredi. By the way, his companions were Hephaestion, Ptolemy, Perdiccas, Seleucus, Eumenes, Lysimachus and Leonattus, who all grew up together with him and took an oath to stay and follow him until the ends of the earth, until death and they stayed that way.

My Current Read:- Alexander: Child of a dream

Alexander has learnt the lessons of life from Aristotle and has come back to Pella, his birth town. He has been made as Commander of the Vanguards and given a troop comprising of his closest friends Hephaestion, Seleucus, Ptolemy, Periccadus and others. He has experienced the real pleasure of love making with an experienced prostitute named Pancaspe.

Reflections

I am now deeply absorbed in the life and making of Alexander. The book is so absorbing that given a chance, I would stop doing everything and finish the trilogy. Only if someone made money on my behalf! How I wish !

My Current Read:- Alexander: Child of a dream

I started reading this book because I am very interested in Greek Mythology and intrigued by it at times. A friend of mine, who is a voracious reader suggested to start with this one.

It's very interesting. Am at a phase when Alexander is 10, has made a "Until Death" friendship pact with Hephaestion and has saved a girl from the mines in Mount Pangoes and has named her Leptine.

To be honest, I never knew Cleopatra was Alexander's sister until I started reading this book! That shows my History skills ;)

And I am now much more intrigued by the Greek Gods Zeus, and specially Dionysus.

By the way, there is this Greek restaurant in Piccadilly Circus, London named after Dionysus. Try it out. I have and the food is amazing!

She is sensational. And yet she is down to earth and simple at heart. Her drop-dead looks can impress the most discerning critic. But she will never give you a moment to believe that she is someone special. Meet one of Chennai's most beautiful women - Trisha Krishnan.

When girls her age are still trying to grapple with acne, Trisha is out walking a ramp, sporting some amazing outfits. To say that she is charming would be playing down a lot of this taurean's personality. Her light brown eyes and glorious smile speak volumes, but they don't outdo her sharp intellect. Trisha was crowned Miss Chennai for the year 2000. On the professional front, she has already done a couple of advertisements including Lalitha Jewellers and Kumaran Silks.

Trisha hopes to wait a couple of years before competing for the Femina Miss India crown, her best bet for the famed Miss Universe title. One would be astonished to learn that this belle is just out of school. And yet she has a certain maturity about her.

She is a talented ballet dancer and an expert swimmer. Trisha enjoys all the attention that she gets. And she herself idolises Claudia Schiffer, Aishwariya Rai and Madhu Sapre. Sapre is her favourite.

ROMANCING THE CAMERA Trisha strikes a picture perfect pose

Keeping pace with the hi-voltage Trisha can leave you a bit breathless. She talks nineteen to the dozen - that too with the velocity of a quizmaster in a rapid-fire round. The city is asleep at 11.30 p.m., but the model-turned-actress is all smiles. And not without reason. For life has finally come up orchids for her. With a diary that's crammed with call sheets, Trisha is straddling two cities - Chennai and Hyderabad, devouring every minute under the flashbulb.

In a pause-free interview, she speaks about Hyderabad (sans blues!), her forthcoming Tamil films, pesky people who invade privacy and her personal style. Excerpts:

Looks like Hyderabad has become your second home...

Not second, first. (Laughs) Just joking. But yes, there are plenty of offers. I'm doing "Athadu" with Mahesh Babu and there's a Raghavendra Rao film too. The budgets are big, and above all, I don't feel homesick in Hyderabad. I've picked up the language quite well.

What about your forthcoming Tamil films?

I've been listening to a lot of scripts. Three films will take off soon. There's "Six" with Surya, "Mass" with Vijay and a film with `Jayam' Ravi. Now, I've reached a stage where quality, not quantity matters. There was a time when I was signing films in a frenzy. But we all learn from mistakes. Now, scripts are significant to me. Somehow, the glamour tag stuck to me from the beginning. But it's films like "Gilli" in which I play a thoroughly deglamourised role that satisfy my urge to perform. I don't want to be a wallflower in any film.

From modelling to movies, the crossover was pretty easy for you...

Modelling and films just happened. Might sound clichéd. But that's the truth. I remember even as a child I just wanted to become famous. After winning the Ms. Chennai crown, the transition to films was a natural option. Even my debut film shoot didn't make me nervous. It was a Priyadarshan film. The veteran director knows how to handle newcomers. He made me do very light scenes before venturing into intense ones.

What is it that you like about your career?

Oh! I simply love what I'm doing. I can't imagine myself doing monotonous jobs in offices. There's so much variety in this line. Every day is a fresh experience. But yes, there are some minuses as well - erratic work schedules could leave you stressed out. Sometimes, when you want to wrap up films you are forced to do even two shifts a day. There's so much pressure. Besides, with freshers entering the field every other day, actors might end up feeling insecure. But competition is a non-issue if you find acceptance among the audience.

And about beating stress...

Fan mail keeps me going. They are my best and bitter critics. I love chatting with them. Besides, I have my own unwind routine. I take off at least twice a year on a holiday. But the thing is that on the third day of my holiday itself I start getting bored (chuckles). And yes, I do enjoy my private space. In fact, nothing has changed after I became a film star. I continue to go on walks and watch films at theatres. Being a public face doesn't mean losing out on personal space. I have a group of friends, we meet up, chat, enjoy...

Private space? But wasn't it invaded a few months ago?

Yes, I know you're referring to the Internet episode. Some people can be nasty. But I don't attach much importance to such things. Life goes on as usual...

About your childhood...

My best memories are those of my childhood. I studied at Church Park. I used to hang out with a group of friends. I also travelled a lot. It was great fun. And I must tell you about my mom. She's been my biggest strength. Our comfort levels are high. I'm happy when I leave things to her to manage. Initially, there was a little apprehension in my family about my taking up films. But realising my interest, my mom said I shouldn't waver.

Being a model, have some of her film costumes shocked her?

Oh, yes. Looking back, I laugh at some of the clothes I've worn. But luckily, now I have a personal designer - Anu, who knows my tastes. She takes care to come up with aesthetic designs. But sometimes when certain roles demand garish outfits, I have to give in. And I hate loud, screaming colours. But they look good on the screen. Personally, I'm a jeans and T-shirt person. I like dressing up, not dolling up — for occasions. I don't follow any diet or work-out pattern. I'm a major foodie. When I feel I've gained some kilos, I cut down on non-veg and rice. That's it.

If not films...

I would have been a psychologist. I loved the subject in college. I wanted to specialise in criminal psychology.

On fame's downside...

Actually nothing. I told you about my fixation to become famous since childhood. I've no regrets. The industry has taught me a lot of patience. I believe in myself.

Charlize Out of Character By Sara Davidson Trivia question: Name a recent Best Actress Oscar winner who grew up milking cows. Stumped? What if we tell you she’s blond and beautiful, except when she’s playing a female serial killer, in which case she’s shockingly scary? What if we add that she’s intensely passionate—not in the typical Hollywood way, but in galvanizing people into action for the causes she believes in? If you still haven’t guessed, it’s Charlize Theron. Growing up on a farm in South Africa, she picked corn, rode motorcycles and, yes, milked cows. In a country divided by apartheid, she was taught to speak her mind during highly charged political discussions. She learned to stand up for herself, a lesson driven unmistakably home one night in 1991 when she was 15. Her father arrived in a drunken rage, and in self-defence, her mother shot him dead. At age 16 and on her own, Theron moved to Europe to model, then to New York, where she studied ballet. After a knee injury, she made her way to Hollywood, where she had to fight for parts that required her to do more than look beautiful. Playing a serial killer in Monster was Theron’s biggest challenge. She became one of the few actresses under 30 to win an Academy Award, demonstrating a wizard-like ability to change the way she looks and moves, disappearing into her character. For her new film, North Country, based on the true story of a woman who brought a landmark sexual harassment suit against an American mining company, Theron spent time with locals and miners to absorb their culture. This kind of on-the-ground research, she says, allows her “to find the truth” in a role. RD: Is the story of your discovery true? You lost your temper when a bank wouldn’t cash your cheque and . . . Theron: It was my survival skills kicking in. When you’re that age and you’re trying to get by, if you roll over, you’re going to die. I had to stand up and say, “If I leave this bank without this cheque cashed, I’m not going to have a place to sleep tonight.” A [talent] manager behind me in line later introduced me to an acting school that I really liked. RD: It was a moment when a chance encounter changed the course. Theron: Yeah, yeah. RD: Did you experience apartheid growing up in South Africa? Theron: You couldn’t live there at that time and not experience it. But you know what? I had a wonderful childhood, and I feel so incredibly blessed to have been able to live in the nature that I did live in. RD: Were there wild animals around where you lived? Theron: Not on our farm. We had ostriches—and cattle. RD: What kind of farm? Theron: My parents had a road construction company, so they used most of the land for the big graders, machines and water trucks. But we lived off the farm to feed the household. RD: Did you work in the garden? Theron: I had to milk cows and pick corn—and learn how to drive the tractor at a very young age. RD: I have a friend whose ancestors crossed America in covered wagons. She was raised with a frontier ethic: “Whatever happens, I can handle it.” Was that same ethic taught to you? Theron: It’s all about survival. A good friend who still lives in South Africa deals with the circumstances there every day. She talks to me in this matter-of-fact way about having had her handbag robbed, or being held at knifepoint in her house. I was raised with the idea that you can feel sorry for yourself, but then, get over it, because it doesn’t get you anywhere. RD: Did you ever go through a period of rebelling? Theron: There was always this awareness that you have to be responsible for yourself in order to have what you want. And that meant “Be responsible with this little motorcycle that we’re going to give you, because you’re only five. If you’re not, you’re going to hurt yourself”—which I did. My mum wasn’t like, “Poor baby.” She was like, “You do wheelies. That’s what’s going to happen.” My mum’s philosophy was, “If you get yourself in trouble, you’ve got to get yourself out of trouble.” RD: How did your father’s killing affect you? Theron: That’s something I’m not talking about anymore. I feel like it’s just time to put that to rest. RD: Tell us about North Country. Theron: I play a woman who leaves her husband. To support her two children she starts working as a hair colourist. You can’t feed three mouths on that. The mine is hiring women, and she starts working there. Pretty soon, she can afford a house and take care of her kids. But, this mine is the bread and butter for everybody in the area. A lot of men feel that jobs are being taken away from them for women to work there. So, the women in the mines start being treated poorly. RD: How were they treated? Theron: There was a lot of verbal abuse, and a couple of times things got physical. It got pretty ugly. But the great thing about this story is that it’s not black and white—men being bad, women being good. It’s about people trying to survive in a small town where things are really difficult. RD: Have you ever personally experienced sexual harassment? Theron: I think the most important thing my mother instilled in me was that if you walk into a room weak, people will take advantage of you. If you send off the energy that says, “Look. I’m smart. Don’t try to pull one over on me,” that’s not going to happen. People talk about the casting couch, but I’ve never, never experienced anything like that, because I never walked into the room giving anybody any inkling that was remotely possible. RD: How did you prepare for the role in North Country? Theron: I spent as much time as I could with the people of this small town—to really understand their causes, on both ends. And there was an accent involved, which was a huge part for me, because it says so much about people. RD: When you assume a role, your whole persona changes. Had I not known that was you in Monster, I never would have recognized you. Theron: I grew up on a stage, as a ballerina. I played a swan, and when the swan died, I died. I never look at a role as me, Charlize, playing this person. This is a different person than I am, and I have to go and find that person. I have to go and find the truth. RD: You were named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World by People magazine. Did you know that you were beautiful growing up? Theron: I don’t think I ever heard my mum say, “What a pretty girl.” I heard her say, “What an incredible dancer, what an incredible performer.” I have days when I do my hair and makeup, put a little black dress on, and I feel hot. And I have days when I put jeans on and have this roll sticking out. But I like the way I look, and don’t spend much time in front of the mirror. RD: You have your own production company. What are you working on? Theron: I’m developing a show with John Walsh about a women’s correctional facility. We’re talking about murder and violence in these women. RD: More girls are getting involved in physical violence these days. Theron: It’s not rap. It’s not violence in movies. At the end of the day, the problem is what’s not happening in the homes of these families. Mothers aren’t raising their children to know what’s wrong and right. RD: You’ve played assassins and robbers. You don’t have any ambivalence about glorifying those roles? Theron: No, because I never would play a character who does horrible things and doesn’t take responsibility for his or her actions. They’re not finding some excuse, saying, “It was this movie I saw that made me kill seven men.” They’re saying, “Look, my circumstances sucked, but I know that what I did was wrong.” Hopefully, somebody can see Aileen Wuor-nos’s life and go, “I need to stay out of these situations so I don’t end up like that.” RD: You’re an animal rights advocate, aren’t you? Theron: Yes. I’ve worked with sanctuaries in South Africa and foundations in Los Angeles, like Best Friends and the Amanda Foundation. Whenever I can help out with free adoptions or fostering, I do. RD: Some people dismiss animal advocacy as frivolous, because there are people starving in the world. Theron: I come from a country where starvation is huge, AIDS is huge, so I’m very aware of people suffering and I’m involved in those issues as well. I started the first anti-rape campaign in South Africa years ago, when nobody talked about rape. But one is not more important to me than another. My mother used to say, “You have to fight for things that don’t have a voice.”
